From 2012 new tyre labels will make it easier for us to compare tyres on energy efficiency, noise impact and safety performance. In the meantime, here are some tips on choosing better tyres.

From November 2012 it will be easy to buy better tyres because new EU regulations will come into force setting stricter standards for tyre performance and requiring all tyres to be labelled at point of sale with information on wet grip, fuel efficiency and rolling noise. >Read more about the new labels

In the meantime, ask your tyre supplier for tyres which have:

  • Low rolling resistance
  • Low rolling noise
  • Good wet grip

Tyre manufacturers' websites should  have information on which of their tyres are the most energy efficient, low noise and safe.

www.tyrereviews.co.uk - This comparison site collates reviews of 750 different tyres from over 30 expert tyre tests across Europe. Tests generally include rolling resistance, dry/wet grip and noise, as well as other performance factors. You can search the review database you can either browse by tyre manufacturercar modeltyre size,or by tyre type.

www.autoexpress.co.uk - This online magazine runs annual tyre tests on normal and winter tyres, which include testing on rolling resistance, wet/dry braking and cabin noise.

www.tyretest.com - An independent online consumer platform for reviewing tyres. Reviewers test tyres under normal everyday road conditions. Tests include grip/braking in wet/dry conditions and interior/exerior noise levels. Includes some truck tyre tests.

www.blackcircles.com - Has compiled a range of  car tyre tests by brand and also by model of car. These tyre tests have been put together using data gathered from customer feedback and resident tyre experts and are not based on official data but on the impartial opinions of different drivers. Tyre tests include tyre grip, durability and road noise.
